The Mississippi Delta is the flat alluvial plain that
flanks the western part of the state. This leaf-shaped area is often
referred to as the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta, for its borders are
defined by these two powerful rivers.
David L. Cohn, author of God Shakes Creation
and Greenville native, devised a geo-cultural definition of the
region. He wrote that “the Delta begins in the lobby of the
Peabody Hotel in Memphis and ends on Catfish Row in Vicksburg.”
His boundaries encompass our Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail.
Below is an interactive map of the Tamale Trail. Plotted
there are the locations of the subjects with whom we have conducted
oral histories, as well as other vendor locations. To learn more
about each site on the Trail, click on any of the stars and a new
window will open. The number that appears next to the town reflects
the number of locations mapped in that particular locale.
For those interested in traveling along the Tamale
Trail, links to detailed maps and driving directions are included
within the information specific to each tamale vendor. When making
travel plans, please contact these establishments directly. Every
effort has been made to make the Hot Tamale Trail a functional and
up-to-date map of vendors and locations, but all information is
subject to change without notice.
