Harmonium Films in association with The Southern Foodways Alliance presents

A Film By Alexis Boling

This 60-minute documentary explores the culture of hot tamales in the Mississippi Delta. Incorporating interviews with tamale cooks, vendors, and connoisseurs, THEY’RE RED HOT investigates both the origins and persistence of this tradition. In-depth discussions with Southern food experts shed light on the tamale’s migration to “the most Southern place on earth,” and various Delta musicians muse over the traditional blues lyrics that make mention of hot tamales. The film culminates with a group of hot tamale enthusiasts taking a trip along the Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail, as their gastronomic revelations are recorded along the way.
